STC Eats - Mattingly’s St. Charles

original-written date: 12/31/24

Finally straying away from the Streets of St. Charles and toning down the fancy to talk about one of our most frequent sports bars in The Chuck.  Mattingly’s is one of the best spots to catch a game and have a wide variety of food to choose from so things never get stale. They also have trivia nights and other fun events throughout the year to keep things exciting.

Mattingly’s is one of those places I’ve been to a million times and have been going to with my family since I was little.  It used to be well-known for having some of the cheapest burgers in town, and even though prices have risen a little bit, it’s still a very affordable restaurant overall.  I love the variety of their menu, I love that there’s tons of TV’s (and big ones at that) to watch all the games, and you almost always run into someone you know when you go there.  It’s also a good place for hosting events with their extended event space “The Room.” We’ve never rented it out ourselves, but it’s a more private area and seems to be a good option for parties and event meals.

The Drinks

Nothing overly complex or too fancy about the drinks here, but if you’re looking for cold beers and simple cocktails at a reasonable price, this is a good spot to go.  They have lots of beers on tap and even more bottled or canned. I’m a tap man myself, so the Kona Big Wave, Mango Cart, Blue Moon, Bud Light, and Michelob Ultra drafts are always my go-tos. But they have liquor and make a solid mixed drink as well, not to mention a handful of cocktails, seasonal drinks, shots, and wine. I also like that you can get buckets of beers, perfect to watch a game with your buddies.

The Food

The appetizer list is extensive, but the theme of the apps as a whole is “Run the damn football.” We’re talking nachos, chips and dips (spinach dip), all the fried food favorites like toasted ravs, mini tacos, onion rings, fries, etc.  I’m a big fan of their fried pickles and love their ranch dressing.  They’re very well-known for their “World Famous” Chicken wings. They got 3 styles: Traditional bone-in, boneless, or cajun chicken wings for that extra kick. They have a huge list of sauces, but some of my personal favorites are the Honey BBQ, Hot BBQ and the Hot Honey.

In Soup and Salad corner, they have a rotating soup of the day in addition to their two staples: chili and french onion soup.  My mom got the onion soup the other day and it was right up her alley.  They have tons of salad options, my favorite is the Crispy Chicken Salad buffalo styleTaco salad, grilled chicken, caesar, cobb and a southwest salad are other highlights.

Next section of the menu are their Quesadillas and Pizzas.  The quesadillas are straightforward and nothing too fancy - you can build your own or choose from Chicken, veggie, taco, bacon, and steak.  The pizzas come in 9 inch, 12 inch, and 14 inch variations, but the specialty pies only come in 12 or 14.  Buffalo and BBQ chicken in addition to the classics, or you can build your own, which is what I opt for when I go the pizza route.  I like their cheese mix a lot, the sauce isn’t too special, and I often find it could be crispier, but it’s a solid 7/10 pizza in my book.  Their BYO options are loaded as well - including shrimp for real adventurous eaters.

The meat of the menu are their sandwiches, burgers, and wraps. In the wrap department, my go-to order is always a Buffalo chicken wrap.  Theirs is a good one too - but they have lots of options like Cajun, chicken caesar, and southwest style.  I haven’t met a burger I didn’t like here, but my go-to is the 5 Alarm Burger which is spicy seasoned with pepper jack, crispy jalapenos, and southwest sauce. The Western and Patty Melt are other standouts in my book. The Sandwiches make up the majority of the menu and come with one side.  I usually gravitate toward chicken sandwiches, so the 5 Alarm, Spicy Florentine, and Buffalo chicken are all winners for me.  But they also have blackened and grilled chicken, turkey options, a french dip, BLT, club, reuben, fish, steak - you name it!

They also have a handful of entrees served with two sides.  Here is where you’ll find a couple of steaks, chicken fried steak, fish and chips, open-faced roast beef, and a chicken strips platter. The one I’ve tried from here was the Smothered Chicken with onions, mushrooms, peppers and smothered in mozz.  The flavor was great but the chicken was extremely dry in my experience.

All in all, when it comes to sports bars, this place is one of the better options in St. Charles. It’s affordable and accessible, and they have a really good variety of options on the menu to keep things fresh each visit.  Really good spot to watch a game, grab a couple drinks and apps, or bring the big family for an easy meal. I will say in recent years the service has declined a bit - they’re still very friendly, but the kitchen is slower, so takes longer. They also get very busy, and we’ve even had experiences where they aren’t full but are waiting to seat people due to short staff.  In our most recent visits it hasn’t been an issue though for what it’s worth.
