The 5th installment on STC Eats holds a special place in my heart - Tony’s on Main. My family’s been going to Tony’s my whole life and we have lots of community connections to this establishment. In grade school we’d go here for the occasional birthday dinner, in high school my friends and I would venture in for the lunch buffet, in college we’d come back for a nice dinner before going upstairs to the bar. Lots of great memories, not to mention lots of great drinks and food as well.
Tony’s on Main
Located: Historic Main street St. Charles
132 N Main St, St Charles, MO 63301
Hours: Closed Mon, 3 pm - 9:30 pm Tues-Thurs, 3 pm - 1 am Fri-Sat, 3 pm - 8:30 pm Sun
Tony’s is a spot that - similar to Prasino in a previous STC Eats - is very versatile. They have a very nice, calm dining room area that’s great for anniversaries and dates. When we sit here it’s often for a nicer meal like a steak, seafood, or chicken entree with a nice bottle of wine or cocktails. They also have a smaller bar area with high-top tables, where we’d sit if we were going for a quicker, cheaper sandwich or wrap option. Upstairs is Tony’s on Top - complete with a patio overlooking main street that’s beautiful to sit on when it’s a nice day, but also has plenty of high tops indoors for cold or hot days. This is typically where we go to get some buckets of beers, appetizers or pizzas. But one thing I love about Tony’s is their consistent menu and that you can order anything wherever you sit.
The Drinks
When I go to Tony’s, I’m usually opting for a nice draft beer or a simple cocktail, but they’re capable of much more. They have an extensive wine selection, most of which can be bought by the glass or by the bottle (some options are bottles only for the fancier selections). They’re also well-known for their martinis - it’s my mom’s favorite spot in St. Charles to get a martini. They also have no shortage of options for the bourbon and whiskey lovers in your life, not to mention scotch and other spirits.
Happy Hour
Tony’s has a Happy Hour menu that runs from 4-6 pm Tuesday-Friday. This is a small, limited menu, but if you’re looking for a spot for some cheap drinks and apps, this is your place. All Draft beers and Wells are just $4, house win is $5, a Buffalo Trace old fashioned for $7, and some specialty cocktails in the $6-$8 range. They have five food options that are all just $7 during Happy Hour, including their specialty the White Chicken Nachos. These are simple but fantastic - chips covered in a white queso/shredded chicken mixture. They also offer toasted ravioli, cheeseburgers, linguini salsiccia, and a 12 inch one topping STL style pizza (again, for only 7 BUCKS).
The Food
There’s no shortage of options at Tony’s for whatever it is you’re craving. In addition to the apps we covered above, they also have a delicious shrimp & artichoke dip that’s served with sliced french bread. Another favorite on the appetizer list for me is the garlic shrimp which is served with a bit of linguini - but you really can’t go wrong with the apps here.
Tony’s has some very good pasta and pizza as well. You can build your own or choose from their five options - my personal favorite is the pasta con broccoli which has broccoli and mushrooms in a rich white sauce (with a hint of red sauce). I especially like to add chicken or shrimp to this one. The pizzas are super solid, I always suggest the St. Louis style with provel cheese, but they also have a more traditional option which they usually sell by the slice on the weekends while people are bouncing around bars. They also are well-known for their salads, particularly their Tony’s house dressing, a sweet and tangy French.
They’ve got a rock solid selection of sandwiches and burgers for those not wanting the full entree experience. My brother is a particularly big fan of the Tony’s Steak Sandwich - a filet with sauteed onions and mushrooms topped with melty provel. The Blackened chicken wrap with sauteed peppers, lettuce, two kinds of cheese and aioli is another winner.
The entrees are where Tony’s stands out to me. I’m not the biggest steak guy, but I can even enjoy one of their many great steak options. I prefer the chicken - particularly the Chicken Anthony. There is also a Steak Anthony served in the same lemon cream sauce that is topped with provel cheese. The lemon and provel elevate this to another level and makes it my favorite menu option at Tony’s. Other favorites include the Chicken Spedini and Modiga in the poultry department. Tony’s is known for their incredible steak butter, another reason to go the steak route, as well as the combo plates they offer. For instance, Hannah’s Combo gives you a 4 oz filet and an 8 oz chicken anthony for those who can’t choose between them. They’re no slouches when it comes to seafood either, as their shrimp is always great, the scallops scampi, salmon, and mahi mahi are all delicious choices.
Tony’s is one of those places that I never leave hungry, and I never leave unhappy. They have so many good options for the type of night you’re having, the staff is always super friendly and attentive, and I love the ambiance/unique layout of the restaurant. It is and will always be one of my favorite St. Charles spots, the Chicken Anthony is one of my favorite entrees in St. Charles, and the White Chicken Nachos are one of my favorite apps in St. Charles. Add it all up and you have one of my favorites.
